Pues bien, cuando hablamos de STEM hacemos referencia al conglomerado de métodos de Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas, que se han reconocido como transcendentales para el futuro. Entonces ¿por qué incluir el arte? La respuesta más acorde es: transformar.
Diferencias entre STEM y STEAM
STEM por sus siglas en inglés significa Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería, y Matemáticas,
STEAM su único cambio en su significado es la “A” que hace referencia al “Arte”.
STEM hace referencia a una metodología que alude al estudio y la manera de relacionar las disciplinas como Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas con el medio que nos rodea, las actividades diarias y los conocimientos.
STEAM alude a una metodología que se refiere a la ejecución de las mismas disciplinas que se manejan en STEM; Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas, pero en este caso se aplican de manera artísticas y haciendo uso de actividades lúdicas.
Las actividades STEM por naturaleza utilizan destrezas interpersonales e intrapersonales como el trabajo en equipo y la creatividad.
En STEAM también se fortalece el desarrollo de destrezas interpersonales e intrapersonales como el trabajo en equipo, la creatividad, y un añadido que sería el pensamiento crítico.
¿Por qué el arte en la ciencia?
Una de las principales características del arte es la facilidad para acceder a este, lo que quiere decir que se encuentra al alcance de todos. Sin afectar el contexto social, los conocimientos o las preferencias personales, todos podemos relacionarnos en algún nivel con una obra de arte. Ciertamente el arte cuenta con reglas y exige conocimientos y experiencias para ejecutarlo, pero únicamente se precisa de sensibilidad para contemplarlo.
Cuando logramos juntar el arte con las ciencias, entonces los preceptos que se consideran complicados o inclusive intimidantes se tornan comprensibles para cualquier persona.
El arte además es creativo por naturaleza, y cuando se exige usar la imaginación en las ciencias, entonces también la forma de aprovechar los conocimientos y destrezas alcanzadas será de manea creativa, y esta novedad permitirá que más temprano que tarde se logre la transformación o la innovación.
STEAM en la educación
Esta metodología se implementa con gran ahínco en los primeros años escolares, que es la etapa en la que los niños empiezan a hallar nuevas nociones que exigen estímulos lúdicos y dinámicos para entenderlas, pues es por medio de las prácticas como el ser humano asimila de modo más efectivo.
Áreas como Ingeniería, Matemáticas, y Tecnología, pueden ser fastidiosas para enseñar en un pizarrón, pero si se reubican en otro espacio o se aplican en actividades físicas, tal es el caso del ensamblaje de un robot, donde las leyes, fórmulas, y reglas de las ciencias se tornan más fáciles de explorar.

El pensamiento computacional actúa en pro de promover el aprendizaje de la categorización y el código en los estudiantes, pero no solo esto. También se usa en la educación para solucionar dificultades a través de algoritmos en diferentes materias del conocimiento como las ciencias biológicas, matemáticas, e inclusive las humanidades.
U ejemplo que uestra sus alcances puede verse con mayor facilidad en la enseñanza de la música, pues permite desplegar y clarificar el sentido de la sincronización y el ritmo. Por otro lado, aplicando este pensamiento en los jóvenes en materias como física y química es idóneo para transmitir conocimientos sobre el método científico empleado en ambas materias.
Dicho esto, habría que mencionar la importancia que tiene para el sistema educativo tradicional sumar el pensamiento computacional a sus enseñanzas. De esto modo logramos fomentar el desarrollo integral de los estudiantes. Pero ¿de qué manera podemos lograrlo’ Una forma muy simple y que seguramente ya se hace sin saberlo es por medio de las clases de robótica diseñadas para niños.
Sin duda, la manera más sencilla, poderosa y entretenida de fomentar el pensamiento computacional en los estudiantes de todas las edades es a través de la robótica educativa. Ahora bien, si se aplica en nivel primario, el potencial a desarrollar es aún mayor y más vigoroso, puesto que el cerebro de los niños pequeños es mucho más receptivo y curioso.
Los juegos entretenidos que seguramente muchos niños tienen en su casa y usan de forma espontánea, y que además les permite desarrollar el pensamiento computacional son los legos o blocks como también se les conoce. Los beneficios de este tipo de juguetes son enormes.
