La robótica en el aula

A medida que la tecnología y la ciencia avanzan a un ritmo acelerado, se hace necesario implementar nuevas modalidades de enseñanza dentro de las aulas, así es como surge la idea de   integrar STEM y las habilidades del siglo XXI, como la adaptabilidad, la iniciativa y la colaboración. 

Algunos gobiernos en el mundo piensan que, a menos que los estudiantes aprendan las habilidades avanzadas necesarias para sobresalir en futuros trabajos, ellos, y la nación, se quedarán rezagados en el rápido ritmo del progreso.

Seguramente al evaluar las circunstancias, los maestros pueden sentirse agobiados y desalentados por el hecho de convertirse en expertos STEM, aún más avanzados que sus estudiantes.

¿Qué es la robótica?

La robótica es un campo interdisciplinario que integra la ciencia, la ingeniería y la tecnología. Implica el diseño, construcción, operación y uso de máquinas llamadas robots para realizar tareas realizadas tradicionalmente por seres humanos o sustituir las acciones humanas.

El objetivo de la robótica es diseñar máquinas que puedan ayudar a los humanos.

Está Compuesta por campos de ingeniería mecánica, ingeniería de la información, ingeniería eléctrica, mecatrónica, bioingeniería, electrónica, ingeniería informática, ingeniería de control, ingeniería de software, matemáticas, entre otros.

¿Qué son los robots?

Un robot es una máquina, especialmente una programable por computadora, capaz de ejecutar una serie compleja de tareas con velocidad y precisión. Puede ser guiado por un dispositivo de control externo, o el control puede estar incrustado en su interior. La mayoría de los robots son máquinas que realizan tareas, diseñadas con énfasis en la funcionalidad absoluta, en lugar de la estética expresiva. Estas tareas pueden ser autónomas, con poca o independientes de la intervención humana.

Los robots se utilizan ampliamente en industrias como la de los fabricantes de automóviles para realizar tareas simples y repetitivas y en industrias donde el trabajo debe realizarse en entornos peligrosos para los humanos.

Principios fundamentales de la robótica

El prolífico escritor de ciencia y ciencia ficción Isaac Asimov (1920–1992) desarrolló las Tres leyes de la robótica, con la esperanza de protegerse contra la inteligencia artificial potencialmente peligrosa. Aparecieron por primera vez en su cuento Runaround de 1942:

  • Un robot no puede dañar a un ser humano o, por inacción, permitir que un ser humano sufra daño.
  • Un robot debe obedecer las órdenes que le dan los seres humanos, excepto cuando dichas órdenes entren en conflicto con la Primera Ley.
  • Un robot debe proteger su propia existencia siempre que dicha protección no entre en conflicto con la Primera o la Segunda Ley.

Los fanáticos de Asimov dicen que las leyes estaban implícitas en sus historias anteriores.

Se agregó una ley 0 en Robots and Empire (1985): «Un robot no puede dañar a la humanidad o, por inacción, permitir que la humanidad sufra daños»

Según Jonathan Bartlett: Las leyes de la robótica utilizan un lenguaje ordinario e intencional. Eso funciona para seres humanos ordinarios y decididos. Pero los robots no son humanos. Por lo tanto, esas reglas deben adaptarse para que sean las reglas de los fabricantes de robots, no las de los propios robots. Estos pueden traducirse en reglas para los fabricantes de robots de la siguiente manera:

Bartlett ofrece reglas para los fabricantes de robots en su lugar

1) Los robots solo deben construirse teniendo en cuenta la seguridad humana. Los diseñadores deben reconocer que los humanos pueden cometer errores y deben incorporar salvaguardas contra los errores prevenibles.

2A) El comportamiento robótico debe ser predecible para que los operadores humanos puedan comprender adecuadamente cómo la entrada del robot dirigirá sus acciones. El objetivo debe ser hacer que el comportamiento sea comprensible/predecible para el ser humano, de modo que pueda trabajar con él sin problemas.

2B) Debe quedar claro qué usuario(s) tiene(n) el control del robot, tanto para el propio robot como para quienes lo rodean. Es decir, si un robot está siguiendo una tarea que lo llevará a un peligro, debe quedar claro para otras personas cercanas quién tiene la capacidad y la responsabilidad de cancelar la solicitud.

2C) El robot debe construirse de manera que la persona que tiene el control permanezca en el mando, al menos que la parte original transfiera explícitamente el privilegio o lo tome alguien con mayor privilegio (es decir, un capataz, un policía, etc.)

2D) Una excepción es que las acciones de un robot deben ser canceladas por cualquier persona más cercana a la situación que el operador.

2E) No se debe poner en peligro ninguna secuencia de coordinación del robot si se cancelan las acciones de cualquier robot en la secuencia (es decir, cancelar las acciones de un robot que pone en peligro a un ser humano no debe causar un peligro involuntario para otras partes del proceso)

3) Los robots deben tener sensores, controles e informes internos para que puedan informar a los humanos cualquier mal funcionamiento detectable o predecible antes de que cause un peligro.

Y añade: Las leyes de los robots, tal como fueron concebidas por Asimov, suponían que podías programar una computadora como si estuvieras hablando con un humano. Si tratamos a la robótica como una disciplina de ingeniería, podemos desarrollar reglas para el desarrollo de robots que de hecho prevengan el peligro para los humanos. Imaginar el futuro es divertido, e incluso necesario. Sin embargo, tratar de encontrar reglas apropiadas para futuros robots que quizás nunca existan no debería interferir con el desarrollo de buenas reglas éticas básicas para desarrollar robots en el futuro cercano.

Ventajas de la integración de robótica y la programación para niños

Despertar una pasión por STEM y hacer que un niño de cualquier edad comience su viaje puede comenzar ahora mismo: los estudiantes desde la edad preescolar pueden explorar y aprender de una variedad de robots y sus aplicaciones. 

  1. La robótica ofrece grandes oportunidades para el trabajo en equipo y la colaboración

En caso de que no lo supieras, un club de robótica es una reunión de estudiantes que, después de la escuela, se reúnen para aprender y trabajar con, lo adivinaste, robots. Dichos clubes suelen tener lugar en el aula de una escuela y son moderados por un miembro del personal docente o la administración de la escuela.

Los clubes a veces compiten en competencias STEM locales, donde los equipos de estudiantes tienen la tarea de diseñar y construir un robot para enfrentarse a los oponentes en una serie de desafíos.

  1. Los niños pueden aprender a su propio ritmo en casa

Muchos de los “juguetes” actuales apenas se asemejan a la definición tradicional de la palabra gracias a la inclusión de diferentes componentes educativos. Los robots ofrecen quizás las oportunidades de aprendizaje individual más sofisticadas sin dejar de parecer un dispositivo divertido para niños y adolescentes.

Lego Mindstorms EV3 como herramienta del salón de clases

Mucho más que un juguete, el Lego Mindstorms EV3 es un robot con verdadero poder de cómputo. El dispositivo incluye un procesador ARM9 (suficiente para alimentar una computadora portátil), un puerto USB y conectividad a Internet. El EV3 también tiene tres servomotores interactivos, un control remoto, un sensor de color, un sensor táctil, un sensor de infrarrojos y mucho más.  

¿Cómo funciona?  El EV3 permite a los estudiantes construir un robot y programarlo para realizar una variedad de funciones. Los estudiantes pueden controlar el robot a través del control remoto, la computadora o la interfaz de un teléfono inteligente. Hay una serie de configuraciones incluidas, un sinfín de ideas que los estudiantes pueden probar por sí mismos y muchos sitios web dedicados a programar los diversos modelos de MindStorms.

¿Qué tan difícil es de usar?  No es tan simple como construir con los kits de Lego, pero no está más allá de la mayoría de los estudiantes de cuarto grado en adelante.

¿Qué tan bien funciona?  El EV3 no es un automóvil a control remoto que parece un robot. Es un dispositivo informático de alta potencia que puede hacer cosas bastante impresionantes. Y aunque no es muy probable que adquiera conciencia e intente apoderarse de su salón de clases, definitivamente es una herramienta de aprendizaje útil.

¿Cómo lo uso en el salón de clases?  El EV3 demuestra la implementación práctica de la programación informática y ayuda a desarrollar las habilidades de ingeniería de los estudiantes. Dado que el EV3 también es divertido para los adultos, los maestros pueden sentirse tentados a llevárselo a casa por la noche.
